    Shimano TLD 50 issues

When reeling my TLD 50LRSA it will wind forward and reverse.
This is one of the newer models about 2 years old. This also happened to a Tiagra I had a few years back. My local tackle shop sent it to Ca to have it repaired. It was expensive and took 6 weeks to get it back. Any ideas what the problem is? Is it a easy fix?
    Thanks
    Tim

Don't know how but you're blowin up dogs it sounds like. Hell I charter and have had people tear the handles off but never busted a dog... The dog is a spring loaded triangle that grabs the teeth to keep her from running backward. The only ways to screw that up would be to either put an incredible amount of force and bust it or more likely... Loading so much grease or getting so much crud built up in there that it can't properly spring back and forth...

    Deep:
Thanks for the little advice you gave. All you had to say was it sounds like the dog spring a loaded triangle that grabs the teeth to keep her from running backward and how it might be repaired. But no you have to go on with some BS about how your charters bust handles but not dog springs. After going back and looking at some of your other respones I see what a AH you are.

Deep.....save your energy on this one. It's not worth it.

Sometimes experience doesn't outweigh thin skin or cluelessness.

I guess your not suposed to ask questions on this site without some trying to make you feel like an idiot. The way you learn things is to ask questions

The statement of "have had people tear the handles off but never busted a dog" was based on his experiences(not BS). He also stated why he thinks it is happening - either too much force or too much crud/grease built up.

Calling him an AS after he responded to your question with a legitimate answer only made you for some reason "feel like an idiot" - hence the thin skin.

Now, here is a link to the schematic of your reel. You will see part#'s 362-365. These are the parts associated with the dog and dog springs. The dog is the internal anti-reverse that is spring loaded. Reel is in gear, dog is in place, Reel is out of gear (freespool) dog is manuevered out of the way providing freespool and reverse in your case.

For some reason, your dog is out of place, the spring is gone, the dog is sheared off, or the ratchet/gear it mates with to stop the reverse is rounded off. Don't know why, but as Deep said, it could be by providing too much pressure.

On certain Penn reels, a stainless main gear is required if using too much drag for the reel. The soft brass gears will not stand up to the pressure applied by newer drags or 100lb braid the diameter of 15lb test (or soemthing like that).

Really the only way to see what the problem is, is to tear into the reel and see. Once inside, they aren't too complicated, especially if you have a schematic and resources like Sportfisherman.com to rely on.

And yes, I agree that asking questions is the only way to learn. Getting legitimate answers from experienced people adds to the learning experience. Try to send Alantani, who is on here your question/problem. He is the reel repair expert and may also have a tutorial on your reel on his website.

Good luck. I'd be happy to share my experiences anytime.

I found Alantani's tutorial on a TLD 20/30 II. Check it out. It has a great photo of how the dog is supposed to look.

Wow deep....guess your not supposed to explain why it might break,....just what it giving the problem.....guess your a really bad guy for that.

Deep was simply stating that if the reel if operated and cared for correctly it is very rare for this type of problem to occur, he was not sure what the exact issue was and was giving exmaples of what it might be.....hoping one would hit home and explain the problem so that it does not occur again since you stated this has occured before on your reels.

    Day tripper,

Any luck on getting the reel fixed. Curious to see what the issue was.
