Not a rep, but I do sell a ton of Shimano. There is no such animal as a baitrunner 8000. Shimano makes a Spheros (front drag reel) in an 8000 size. It has a maximum drag of 20.5 lbs. The Baitrunner 6500 is the biggest in the Baitrunner series. It has a max drag of around 16 lbs. The Thunnus reels (with the baitrunner feature) max out at 17 lbs. Any of these reels will handle 20 lb. braid easily. And due to the thin diameter of braid, you may want to consider moving up to 30 lb. for that 12' rod.
BTW, I certainly would not consider any of that "light" tackle! If that's light, what do you consider heavy?

Hi bob they have just hit the streets this side of the pond its name is SHIMANO 8000 GTE-C baitrunner, there is also a 10000 for long range fresh water fishing thanks for the info by the way.
Sorry Flatdog. Didn't realize you weren't from my neck of the woods. Sometimes I forget that this is the World Wide Web.![]()
BTW, do you have any pics of these reels? I'd be curious to check them out.

I haven't heard anything on the Baitrunner 8000 either.....wish I could help you out but I don't have any information at this moment. Is this something that came across from Japan? I know the smaller baitrunner reels will handle the weight as well as the line, however you may want to step up to at least 30 lb. or 50 lb. braid as Bob said to get better performance.
BOB and Squid If you go onto "flea bay" type the designation for the reel in europe or worldwide search there are lots and lots of pictures, they all have aluminum spools double handles all the latest things from shimano, this now becomes a reel with endless applications, I have 3 8010 bait runners but they are all carbon, they have handled fish upto 40lb in fresh water around the world but putting big strain on the reel in the ocean, did not sit good in my mind so now that the aluminum spools are outby the way I did a bit of homework, lb's on rods eg 12lb rod in England would be a 6lb in the USA for some reason!!! so hence all the confusion about light heavy etc, its just the same with hook sizes our sizes do not correspond with yours, its becomes a bit of a mine field when trying to buy anything from different country's
