    shark reel

I am looking for a reelfor a penn mariner 130 class '5 "6. I have no idea what I am getting at this point. What size senator would a 12/0 do on there? Maybe a tagra 50 what?

    Thanks

You are at two opposite ends of the spectrum with your two reel choices. The Taigra 50 is a better reel then the senator but alot more costly. I think a 50 might be alittle light for a true 130 class rod. I guess the question is how much do you want to spend?

That's a pretty heavy rod for shark fishing.

How much do I "want" to spend nothing how much am I willing to spend $650 and I can buy used. I can still get another rod I have not gotten it yet but think it is the one I want. Well the senators could lock up but there are cheap tuff and I have never had any probe with my 9/0 aside from the clicker wile screws. WHat do you think yaking out baits from the surf.

For shark fishing up here in New England most use 50 lb class reels on 50 to 80 rods. I started with 114 senators on 30 to 50 rods. The 50 lb setup should be enough to handle most sharks in our waters. I have severial makos and threshers over 200 lb and a few blues over 400 lb that have not even come close to taxing that gear..

I have yet to chase a shark or even start the motors while shark fishing. I am sure i will need to at some point when the fish get up over 400 but have not had a need as of yet. Fighting a 200 to 300 shark on 50 lb class gear at 25 pounds of drag will stop most long before you run out of line and not much is going very far for very long.

If this helps my shark setup is a Tiagra 30lws 80lb spectra and a 80lb stand up stick also Tiagra Nothing short of 400lb would give me a run for the money , then the 900+ yards of line keeps you cool, that amount of line in the water equates to tons of drag on the fish never mind pounds.

I think a tiagra 50WLRS loaded with 130lb. braid will do you fine. I'm pretty sure your 5'6" rod is rated for 50-130lb. line. Not just IGFA 130. However, if you're fishing from the beach, I would recommend a longer rod.
