A 5 or 6 foot or even a 7 foot rod will not put the hurt on a shark, that a 15 0r 16 footer will, as you say you do not have a boat that can back down or move towards the fish, on the beach the real problem is the last minuet lunges and head throws a 5'or 6 foot stick cannot "flex " enough to save the hook pull or hold the line above the waves, sure line capcity is one thing but if the shark is that big and you cannot stop the run with the drag and rod , well it was not meant to be.
