Saltiga 40 antireverse bearing failed ...twice

I have a saltiga 40 conventional which the anti-reverse bearing failed... twice???

Diawa fixed it the first time and then after one trip an AJ 40lbs broke the antireverse and anti revers pawl and pin in the frame. Same fish and problem the first time it failed.

Is there a better/stronger antireverse bearing I can purchase??
Is this an inherent problem with Diawa??

Is there a better reel for this purpose???

I sent the reel back to them to fix again.

How much drag are you using?

What lb test do you have on the reel?

I know Reef DOnkeys are pullers, but 2 broken ARB's is extreme.

short answer - get the shimano trinidad or torium, switch out the drag washers to carbontex and install the trinidad dc pawl and spring and fish with confidence.

long answer - this is a tough one. if you change out the drags to greased carbontex then the drag pressure will stay where you set it. stock drag washers surge. that's how a reel fails. greased carbon fiber will not stick and that's why the anti-reverse failure rate should be less.

now, specifically addressing the anti-reverse mechanism, if you deliberately set the drags too high (or if you still have sticky stock drag washers), then the anti-reverse roller bearings can fail. it's only one bearing. it does not have infinite holding power. it's a simple fact of life that there is a limit to what these bearings can do. for most of them, 18 pounds of drag is that limit. in recognition of that fact, the shimano trinidad, the shimano torium, the daiwa saltist and the daiwa saltiga all have a secondary anti-reverse mechanism. note that it is a sequential system. it requires that the roller bearing slip (read fail) just a smidge. that slight backwards motion engages the ambassaduer style dog. if the dog slips, the handle moves backwards and at worst can cause injury.

if you wish to continue to fish with the saltiga, i would recommend switching out the drag washers to greased carbon fiber and use a lower drag setting. good luck! alan
