    RODBUILDING METTING pics

The Tri-state custom rodbuilders want to thank kevin knox for coming to the meeting last week.

he put on his abalone shell demo.
it was nice seeing and hearing how you cut, soak, then wrap, unwrap and then finish the shell.
    he spent time answering questions.
i have some pics of the meeting.

we also had a demo of doing the turks head knot.

we also had a few new guests show up,

    Nice pics Paul,quick question..
What did he soak it in,vinegar?
How long did he soak it before it was workable and did he cut it before or afterwards..I would think afterwards right?
Then it looks like he wrapped it with thread to hold until it drys with splice on underside I would imagine ,,then took thread off and glued into place?
    Thats some nice looking stuff!

Kevin did a really nice writeup in Rod Building Mag - issue before last.

I can say that what I've found to work best is the Abalone with the 3M Adhesive backing applied by Aqua Blue Maui.

I cut the shell before soaking.

I soak in vinegar for about 3 hours, then rinse in warm water
peel the backing off and apply the shell directly to to the blank. Start from 1 cut edge and rub lengthwise from the center of the shell out...

Once you have the shell all the way around, wrap the whole shell with thread (in the opposite direction from the way the shell is wrapped) and leave overnight - this will allow the adhesive backing to set up and holds the shell tight.

After that it is finishing normally...

Bravo it looks like you've got it! Get ready for the addiction..... Armbreaker, the article lays it all out. Im in the process of putting together a DVD that will have the video of the process and the written article that can be printed out and taken to the workbench.

Beautiful looking stuff there and thank you both for the information.
I understand it all somewhat now, but are they selling that backed with 3m ready to peel off already? The stuff I picked up a while back had none at all. Yep,more addiction and endless possibilities!I will have to check out the DVD Kevin.
Thanks alot for your help and replies

Yes they sell the backing already applied - I believe it is an additional $1.50 per sheet... If you call Scott at Aqua Blue Maui, he can walk you through it...

I have used the non backed stuff (Don't anymore) - I started out with contact cement - was ok, but not great. I also ahve applied 2 sided adhesive myself - that was better, but it is so much easier and cheaper to buy it already applied.

Check out the post Tuna rods Start to finish, Dan has a few photos on how he did his in there.

Quick question i just built a gaff and did a few turks heads as grips on the butt. I don't want to put any finish over them. I pulled the knot really tight, the problem i have is the knot still slips and turns, you guys have any good fixes? I was thinking just a few small dabs of epoxy in a few spots on the knots? Thanks

In the gaff handles in my post above, I used finish on the wraps. I made sure it soaked in to seal and lock the grip, but I wiped off the excess so that it would still have bite...
