    MD Rod Setup question?

I'll be running Shimano Tiagras 50WLRSA and was wondering if anyone that had these reels have preferences in rods for this reel setup. I have been looking at Star Aerials and Star handcrafted rods. Itll be mostly for Tuna fishing i hope im in the right direction when i say this but im thinking a 5'9" rod 30-80lb class straight slick butt with a roller guide and tip. Or should i run a 5'9" with a 50-100lb class with roller guide and tip or all rollers? I have Star Aerials now and have had no problems with them at all. I just wanted to either upgrade to the handcrafted or get more Aerials. thanks for any advice

if you are going 50# line you can use guides(GOOD GUIDES) ..going to 80# you may want to switch to rollers.(again Good rollers).but they may not be needed,

The size of reel these days doesn't matter near as much as the line you're fishing from that reel. With the reel you're talking about I would assume you're not going to be fishing anything under 50#...and presumably at least 80#. Personally I would go with the heavier of the two rods you mentioned. The Star Rods tend to be better quality than most factory rods...I would recomend them if you're going the store-bought route.

If there's the slightest possibility that you might go custom, contact Paul. He'll do you right.

    Best of luck.

    Star Aerials??

My experiences with the Star Aerial rods has been negative, guides broken and some de-lam on blanks, good price point but I think you get what you pay for in this one..
I have liked their more expensive ones but the Aerials are so-so IMO

I like all the Star rods and agree that the aerials are a lower price point, but on the other hand I have beat the crap out of mine (aerials)as far as fishing them for the past 2 years and not a had a problem yet. Cleaned wiped down after every use.

But................we will see what the 3rd year holds.

I am thinking of going Delux 20-60 or 30-80 for TLD 2 speed 50's spooled with 60 lb mono.

I've got no experience with the Star rods you mentioned but one thing did catch my attention. You mentioned slick buts, and I really don't like them in this application. When you are talking about 50 class reels and trolling offshore I immediately think of an Aftco but. No plastic for me when you stand the chance of hooking into some of the larger pelagics that swim offshore. I have broken slick buts in the past, so I always go with Aftcos when I am setting up the bigger reels. My offshore rods are all custom jobs, either Aftco Wind On roller guides or Turbo ring guides with SIC inserts, and they all have Aftco butts on them. Depending on your choice of blanks and components you shoule be looking between $200 and $300 per rod, the more expensive being an all roller set up. I've never been a fan of the roller tip and roller stripper, go all or nothing.

Whatch out for Sic guides..FUJI, are ALOT better and more expensive than the "other" Sic guides..dont settle for a POS guide..

I thought the Turbo and SIC were registered names for FUJI. Guess I need to get a little more educated.

I fish with the Shimano blue water series. The ones that came out I believe last year. They are great rods. I havent had a problem yet. They are only one year old but fished hard.
