The best way to do this is to have the rod in a horizontal position. Take a grill lighter or some other type of lighter and heat the finish on the guide to be replaced. Move the flams back and forth until the finish starts to bubble. Once it bubbles, take a razor bpade (single edge) and slice the wrap. It will split nicely once heated. Cut down to the layer that you want to remove. Once it is cut, just peel away and then you are good to go.

    Good luck.

carefully cut the thread on top..TOP of the guide foot..
you should be able to peel the thread and finsh off the foot and blank
it should let you remove the old guide
you can carefully scrape off the rest of the finish with a plastic scraper
if a little heat is needed to soften the finish use hair drier with care

if you use an alcohol lamp you wont leave soot on the rod. Also once the epoxy is heated you can cut the top of the guide foot like paul described and find the "end" of the thread. If the rod is on a wrapping machine, talk the belt off so it will spin freely and pull the thread. by pulling the thread you in effect also remove the finish coat of epoxy(only what is on the thread). Match the broken guide with a new one, lightly sand the area that has been removed to prevent the new thread from moving into a preexisting grove. re-wrap and apply new finish. This might take two coats to meet the level of the old finish. When I did repairs on the rods I have, I also re-coated the other guides so they all had a new "gloss" to them and matched better.
