Now I've never fished a planer or been on a boat while one is being fished.

Where would free spool come into the equation? Would having your drag cranked down to get it higher than the Shimano chart really be a bad thing?

    Dave,

You need free spool to trip the planner.

    Like Capt D says

If you are fishing a big planner, number 12 or above, you can't reel the darn thing in unless you trip it or stop the boat. If you free spool them for a couple of seconds the planner will trip. Old Salty's will trip, Sea strikers won't.
You can also reset a tripped planner using the same method.

I bet those Avet Trx quad 50w's put out enuf drag

They are a little pricy though Super sick reels though.

100+lbs of drag with free spool? thats alot of power.

would be cool to have a smaller reel, because it would hold alot of braid on it.

but, i have read, that the tiagra 80 is the heat for it.

"dont change it if it aint broke"

    them avets are sick though

Made in the good ole U S of A too.

    REEL WAKE

I am glad you said it not me Jesse. Since DFA was mentioned I was afraid to even suggest the AVET TR-X series in fear of even thinking about fixing the master's (WAHOONBOX) weapon of choice.

Your right Jesse, those AVETS are the heat.

I have a spread of AVETS and love them. The latest addition is the TRX-30W . It seems like it will catch most anything out there. Incredible DRAG ratings for a reel that size. However, my spread does have an ugly duckling that sits is the corner. Big OL UGLY TIAGRA 80W on bent butt w/ swivel tip set up exactly like WAHOONBOX shows in DFA video. Yeah, I thought about Gettin an AVET TRX-50 so my planer rod would match all my other reels. But, I heed the Advice of the master of DFA and got me an old mixmatched ugly duckling to put more MEATNBOX. What is it they say? "Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery"? YOU FLATTERED AT ALL THESE COPYCATS LIKE ME WAHOONBOX?

im not trying to say anything about fixing anything. i was just wondering.

cuz from what ive read, you need a LOT of drag for running this kind of rig, and this reel has ALOT of drag.

    Just wondering.

I would like to see the drag curve on that avet quad 50.. 0 to 100 in the same amount of arc. I wonder if it sensitive in the begining or at the end? just thinking out loud
