which reel?
I am getting a reel for a '7"6 Shimano Teramar 30 class heavy power fast action. It will be used for flathead catfish, blue catfish, carp, gar, striper, drum, etc maybe even a cobia or something. I am looking at these reels and I am stumped, people are saying I will bend the spool shaft and what have you on a Abu.
What do you guys think?
Abu Garcia 6500CL big game $106
Shimano Tekota $160
Daiwa Sealine level wind $100
Daiwa Saltist level wind $160
Quantum Cabo PT trolling reel $160
Shimano Cardiff $110
Shimano Calcutta $200
Abu Garcia 7000I C3
PS:I am using it for pier/bank(not surf) fishing.

Women love me... fish fear me
You cant go wrong with the shimano's....we do alot of flathead fishing up here outside of philly and use spinning outfits....30 lb braid and a 1/0 eagle claw......if you can get a hold of some creek chubs in the 3-5" range you will be into them big time.....take your thumb and pop its belly to get its guts hanging out and hook them through the mouth and out the top of its head....flatheads only eating live bait is a myth...good luck

AKA Spineyman
Shimano Tekota $160
Daiwa Sealine level wind $100
Daiwa Saltist level wind $160
Any one of those 3 would be great.

Well what do you guys think of the CL big game(sorry I said rocket before), I am leaning towards it for a few reasons for one I can get if for $60 cheaper then the Shimano's and Diawa's and it is only 13.3 onces which is 5 onces less then the saltist and lastly it has a free spool release that I can use with one hand, good for kayaking and what not. I think it retails for $160 or $180 something like that they have them on catfishconnection.com for $106.95.

Sit down Shut up And fish
Not a fan of Abu's, I used to fish them alot, but there is too much plastic in them for me, broke too many of them over the years with big striper's hooked up, and they are a little harder to get parts for them Shimano or Penn. Personally I would go with a Shimano reel, they are good reels for the money and typically very reliable. I would also avoid a level wind for casting or using heavy line's for bigger fish, especially stripers, level winds break if you put too much pressure on them, an open face reel is a better match and will give you far less issues. I'd look into a torium 14 or 16 depending on how much line capacity you need, they are $180 retail, but I've seen them cheaper as well.

Gradyfish265: I agree with the first part of your post about ABU and breaking and I agree he should get a Shimano but Torium is not my choice. It has plastic in it also and will not hold up under heavy drag. I blew mine up 3 times in 5 trips. I recommend a Saltist if you want performance out of that size reel and the same price.

What do you mean to many plastic parts, I have rebuilt a few Abus and they are nearly all metal, the only plastic parts are the level wind gear thingie and maybe a few more that I can't think of.
I was planning on filling it with 30 braid.

That rod with a calcutta 400bsv would make a nice combo. The
7000 would work also but its not built as well as the calcutta.
The avet sx would also work with that rod, amazing capacity
in such a small package and its bullet proof for under $200.

I recommend taking a look at the omoto vs-10. I have caught kingfish to 20kg while jigging and it handled them easily with 6kg drag. Great solid reel, flawless drag and cheaper than the sx. Also casts really well.
