    Quick ? 16 # IGFA rated rod

I just happened to pick up a good deal on some Fin-Nor equipment and I have an Ahab 16# IGFA rated rod here and am thinking about putting a Offshore 8500 on there with 50 or 80 lb braid. I assume that 16 # means that the rod with break with 16 lbs of drag or weight? If so then I guess this wouldn't be a smart choice...

These are the rods I have. FNAS66-16 Heavy 6'6" 16# Aluminum Fuji Hardloy EVA / Gimble

Just want to clarify on the strength before I go off breaking a $250.00 dollar rod.

Generally the IGFA rating on the rod means that it is designed to ideally fish that line only. That doesn't mean that you can't fish other line classes on it, it just means that it won't be a best case use. However, I doubt that heavy braid on that light of a rod would prove to be satisfactory, as it wouldn't have sufficient back bone to pull with a heavy drag. Plus, if you tried it, you'd most likely put more hurt on yourself than the fish you're trying to catch.

Ok, thank you for the info. Will find a different rod.
