QUestion For Those In Th Know???

Ok here goes... I have fished since Jesus was a kid. I own 160 working outfits and have had twice that many through the years... The boss's set of custom stuff is getting pretty deep itself...
He gets them custom done with jungle **** feathers wrapped into blanks made by the wrapper himself. He gets ornate pac bay annodized guides on our troll stuff and top shelf titanium or tungsten guides on the spins...
A few months ago he decided to go with a electric purple/ blue wrap on our new stuff. The old stuff was gold wrap... One of our spin sets (30lb pitch rods) had the gold wraps and some real crap fuji guides that the inserts kept popping out of. These outfits have life time warranty so I told the boss to send them back and have some real guides put on... At $400 for a spin rod thats not asking too much. I told him that as long as they were going back for new guides, to have the wraps changed to the purple blue...
This is where it gets sticky....... The guy who built them said that can't be done because it would screw up the blanks???? Sounds like absolute horseshit to me... Wanted to see if there was any fact behind his assertion or if he was just being lazy or trying to sell the boss another set of sticks???? What say you???

I'm not so sure that he's trying to screw you guys over. If you're talking stripping all the thread work off, underwraps, butt wrap....the whole deal....that could be difficult. If you're stripping down to the blank you do run the risk of damaging the blank, especially if it's graphite. If I was going to the trouble of upgrading components and wanted a new color, I'd just have him build new from scratch and throw the other set up on ebay.

if you are just changing colors or guides i dont think it will "screw up the blanks".

it may be alot of time consuming work, but usually wont "screw up"

I think its a combo of him being lazy and trying to sell us new shit. He has sent us stuff that was too big or too small for a given job. Rather than send it back the boss has me match it up to proper reels then orders a new set done the right way...

He tried to tell the boss that the fuji cheapies were some special oxide ones... BULLSHIT and I say that with a capital "B". I had them in four different shops replacing guides before we had a chance to send them back to him. Other guys changed the wraps and coatings just fine. That set of guides were utter crap.

The boss is a super nice guy and I really get pissed when I see people taking advantage of that and screwing him...

    NOT ME!!!
Sounds like the "Boss" has had a long standing relationship with the builder. As a builder myself, I can tell you its much easier to build a new rod than it is to re-build one. There's basically twice the work with the re-build. However, a reputable builder should stand behind his work and especially so with a customer that has been loyal as your boss seems to have been. If it was me, I'd offer to replace the old rods that were not satisfactory with new rods with the customer paying only for the cost of parts (no labor charge). Then the customer can sell off the undesirables to recoup some of his money.

If the builder is good he should know how to remove guides from a rod. If he says it will screw up the blank he doesn't know the proper way to do it IMO. No reason it can't be done!
