Question from newbie
I am brand new to saltwater fishing. It seems that most folks put some length of mono or fluro at the end of their braided line as a "top shot". What is the purpose of this, and are there any rules governing how long it is should be in relation to weight of line or for whatever reason? Thanks in advance.

Several Reasons:
A) the mono provides some stretch/shock absorption when fighting the fish. Braid has no stretch and can tear hooks out.
B) Mono/Fluoro is a lot less visible in the water than braid
C) Mono is easier on rod guides and components
D) Mono is easier to cut and tie when changing rigs
E) Mono is a lot easier on the hands, braid will tear you up if you grab it under tension and arent wearing gloves
No rules on length, all comes down to personal preference. On offshore trolling outfits i like a hundred yards. On inshore outfits I like enough to have 2-3 wraps on the spool with the lure/rig in casting position from the tip of the rod
