    Question question on ballyhoo rigging

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. Been lurking for a while and soaking up lots of good info and admiring some great catches. Hopefully I can give some back in the near future...

So my first question has to do with rigging chin weighted ballyhoo. Since we encounter quite a few kings and the occasional wahoo, I'm trying to beef up my sea witch rigs without going 100% wire on all of them. I like the tip on looping the pin wire back through the hook eye and egg weight along with the mono. The question is this...is there any reason why one wouldn't run the leader through the egg weight both before AND after passing it through the hook eye (in order to protect it) instead of only running it through just once like you normally see? The only difference I can think of is that the weight hangs lower when you only run the leader through it once. Does the lower weight act as a better keel? Oh, most of these will be run with sea witches or some other skirt. Thanks in advance.

I have seen this done. I believethe mate called them "tooth proof" mono leaders. It would be great if someone could post some video on the subject

    tooth proof

    1) check out Box's forum for the thread with video of the rig in detail.

    2) for the OP question, if you put the wire through the egg sinker once and then back through it again, the egg sinker wouldn't be on the wire rig it would just slide right off. by passing through once its on the wire and mono portion of the loop.

I'm saying you take the tag end of Mono through the crimp, through the sinker, through the hook eye, back through sinker, back through crimp.
The little 3" section of reinforcement wire takes the same path as the mono. The only difference is one end of the wire is flush with the crimp - the other end serves as the pin. Does this make sense?

    loop

normally, the hole in the weight is not large enought to allow the mono to be passed twice through the weight. with the wire going through twice as you described, it might cause the bend in the wire to be too extreme causing it to kink.

try to find some chin weights with a big enough hole to pass your mono through twice. And it will work

A lot of people rig it similar to that. Through the crimp, through the sinker, up through the eye of the hook and back through the crimp (Not back through the sinker). Do this for the mono and wire. Break off the bottom wire and bend the top wire up for the pin. The size of the loop can give you a little movement in the sinker placement under the gills of the ballyhoo but do not make it too big or the eye of the hook will be too far back. You will need to find the right mono, wire, crimp combo. I use 80# mono and 1.0mm crimps so #5 wire is the biggest I can fit. It is a little light for a pin rig but I don't want to use bigger crimps.

I rig like this all the time in late summer when the wahoos are around. The egg sinker ends up having the crimp in front of it and the hook behind it. I use spring type loop protectors with this rig that way the mono is protected from the crimp back.

    Good Luck,
