    Planer rods!

I met up with Mako Wish to discuss Planer rods and how they are used. Here are my first 2, I need to epoxy them, but I'm waiting for the decals to arrive next week. Got 2 more Pac Bay blanks, 60-130 and 80 IGFA to make up next. The lighter will have Fuji SiC HBSG's on it and the roller tip, the other 80 IGFA will be set up the same way with the rollers as this 80.

The one with the Silver Aftco SHD's is an ATX 60-130 blank, trimmed down to be around 4' from reel to tip, #2 ferrule. Gudebrod #246 NCP (its darker than it looks) for the underwrap, double layer of D in black for the overwrap.

The one with the Black Aftco SHD's is an ATX 80 IGFA blank, trimmed to the same length as above. Same thread colors, but I inlayed some gold thread under the rollers, #4 ferrule. Mako Wish has a 130 IGFA planer rod, but it was too short and too stiff, so he recommended an 80 IGFA blank, around 8" longer than the one he has.

Static testing the guide placement...pulling 48# of Drag! Masking tape doesn't quite cut it, so I use Duct Tape now when static testing these! This is a #4 Stuart Unibutt with a #2 adapter from Stuart. The rods are designed to be fought from a swivel rod holder from the boat, but, well, I don't have a boat to test it with, so I had to make do!

Got them epoxied finally! I use d the Lite Threadmaster, loved the way it leveled and soaked into the threads. I did a coat, then reapplied as it was absorbed into the threads. When it got thicker, I added another layer to the guide wraps themselves, so it was like 1 layer on the udnerwrap, 2 on the guide feet wraps. Then I did a normal hi build layer on top of that!

The blue is a dark blue #246 from Gudebrod, but the flash makes it look much lighter in color. It's been raining all day up here, so natural lighting pictures is out!

Nice looking rods. I got a blank coming that I think I may do a planer with. It is a 42 inch 80# blank. Takes a 26 tip. I just don't know about the ferrell and butts. That 246 is a nice looking blue. You are right about the flash lightening it up. Great job dude and thanks for posting.

Most 80's take the #4 butt ferrule/nut. The tip is a 26, the Aftco Swivel roller tops have a huge taper in the tube, so you may have to file the tip down, or go a size up to make it fit over the blank and shim it with the mesh fiberglass drywall tape.

WOW! Those look very impressive, im sure that they are even better in person.......

Inline planer setup or dedicated planer rods? What are you going to target with them?

Once again, great job on the rods.......

Dunno yet! No swivel rod holders in the boats I am usually on, so we will prob use these as downriggers to tow the planers. The SiC guided ones will be like that, the roller ones will give the guys the option of fishing from the planer rod, or using it more as a downrigger. The 80's are set up as inlines for GBFT, the others some guys are going to try to use up in NE for trolling tuna, like yellowfin and bigeye.
