I go through 200-300 rigs a season... #7 stainless to make the pin is my favorite. Line passes through crimp-hook and back through crimp. I slide the stainless in and crush with the crimpers. Then I bend and trim the tag end up 180 degrees from the tip of the hook...80lb mono for the light stuff and 150 or even 200 for the heavy...

i use about an inch of #9 wire inserted in the crimp and trim it as needed......and i pretty much re-rig between trips every rig that hit the water that day.

JMS is on it... #9 wire here... Stiff enough to punch through the mouth and a good portion of my thumb... Stands up proud when they're swimming... I've yet to get a year out of a rig. If it lasts a trip or two I'm happy. We swap out with new rigs frequently and rerig the whole mess of them for the next set of trips.

#9 is good too especially on the heavy rigs... A trick with the #7 that I use is to lay the wire pointing back toward the tail of the bait rather than straight up. This allows it to be pressed flat when a fish grabs instead of possibly poking a hole in the fish's mouth and spooking him... Thats the reason behind the slightly lighter wire...

    Sails

I know I've had a good day when my fingers are all bunged up from pokes with wire, monel, hooks, etc. Ya wake up the next day and your fingers are swollen and bunged up.
    God, ya gotta love it.

Deep, Are you using pin rigs when you target sails?

Deep is on target. Pass the wire through BOTH hook and crimp. Just for a little added protection from chafing teeth. But your rigs should NEVER last an entire season unless they don't get used.

    Stiff Pin Rig

A version of a stiff pin rig I learned to place the hook back further in the hoo to hopefully aviod missed strikes:

    Ingredients:

    7691S 7/0 or 8/0
    loop protector
    2" piece of #9 wire
    2" piece of shrinktube
    2 crimps (1st one larger than 2nd)

Step #1 Leader thru both crimps, loop protector, eye of hook and back thru one of the crimps(larger on). Before you tighten it up and crimp it down, run the #9 wire thru this crimp so you have wire on top, then leader on top of leader you brought back thru. Heat the tag end of you leader so you get the mushroom look. Pull her tight and crimp it down keeping everything lined up.

Step #2 After that run your 2" piece of shrinktube over what you just crimped down, the eye of the hook and @ 1/3 the way down the shank of the hook. (The shrinktube should run from @ the top 1/3 shank of the hook, over the eye of the hook and cover 1/2 of the crimp you just tighten down. Heat the tube so that it tightens down on everything to form a stiff rig.

Step #3 Run the remaining wire thru the second crimp leaving @ 1/2" exposed thru the other side. Crimp this down. Bend the remaining wire up to a 90 degree angle with the leader/rig and your done.

What it give you is a stiff pin rig were you can place the hook further back into the hoo and hopefully avoid those missed hookups because they bit half the hoo off and missed the hook.
