    Penn or Shimano Reels

What reel is on your boat? Penn or Shimano ? Ihave both on our charter boat.I think they are both are great! I have 50tw to 80stw in Penn and 25tld to 80tld in Shimano. They both have there goods and bads. You can't go wrong with eather.I use my 25tld for white marlin with 20 pound line pink Ande. For tuna chunking I like two speeds Penn or Shimano .Trolling I use 50tw to 80tld. I never had a problem with eather as long as if you give them a good cleaning after every trip.Get all the salt off of them!!

Same here suporting both reel companies. I personaly lean towards Shimano just because that is what I have most of. Not just for boats, but in the back and on the beach. Of all the TLD's out they they just keep on working epsecially for the price. I have seen uncleaned ones that get hammered with salt all day and they just work. Light and very strong for not an aluminum reel. All of my spinning reels are shimano too and I think they are great. Some are pricey but I believe you get what you pay for. If I get more than 2 -3 seasons out of my surf gear I'm happy! I also think that a lot of the reel companies (not all) out there are trying to make them better, which is a good thing.

    I'd have to go Shimano.
    Better construction and tighter tolerances.
    Better customer service.
An "out of the box" tiagra will outperform an International hands down! Lighter too.
    Just my opinion.

Im actually interested to see what this thread produces. I have all penn but i fished with over under this summer and those tld 25's were nice reels. Im up in the air on what im doing this year.
Penn has always been the number one choice for me but with all the new things on the market im thinking of making a switch .

You gotta remember Shimano makes gears. That what they do. I believe they lead the bicycle world in shifters, crancks, stuff like that.

I think they are the smoothest reels on the market over all IMO, especially out of the box. And that the other thing I would like to talk about. I modify all my reels once they break. Out of the box means nothing to me unless I'm maging one for casting. Other then that it replacing broken stuff with maybe something better. You shouldn't have to work a brand new reel especially when you pay a couple hundred for it. If it needs mods, then I would not buy it.

What you guys think? Hopefully this will get some talking.

I don't think that you can really compare a machined aluminum reel to a graphite reel. They both have + and -.
The tld series is bulletproof. They have landed some big fish on these reels with no problems. You can fish pretty heavy line on the tld 2 speeds and have excellent cranking power. I would really like to know how far you can push the graphite frames?
Penn makes a fine aluminum reel. They would be 3rd on my list, and if one showed up in the garage I wouldn't kick it out But it seems over the past couple years their customer service has really gone downhill.
Have a problem with a top of the line shimano reel. The factory repairs it within 48 hours and dont be suprised if you have a brand new one sitting on your doorstep.

EX, 20# at strike with the incredible avet freespool.
Pro EX, 50# at strike with freespool
T-RX, 100# at strike with freespool

I think the ex only goes to 25# or so when you push it to full.

Think you are man enough to fight a giant, Standup, with that T-RX??
