    Penn reels questions?

Has anyone seen this problem with Penns?

I have 4- 50 VSWs and this is their 3rd season; they are treated better than my pets at home, rinse & soapy wash after every use- oil in the rollers as necessary, etc

My problem is with the backing plate (not sure the technical term) that secures the reel seat with the anchor bolts? Out of the box, Penn provided what appears to be a black painted aluminum b-plate. And this year, you can see the paint bubbling and all the black paint is lifting and flaking off.

Bet there's a replacement upgrade out there- I think I've seen after-market machined parts...

Am I alone on this? Am I doing something wrong with washdown? Any other suggestions to proper reel washdown/ oil/ etc?

Sounds like the anodize is probally gettng scratched from the reel seat when you crank it down and it s now exposed to the elements , if you replace with new make sure you grease them before mounting them on the rod

    this what you about?

If so, it's not your fault, Penn has this problem. I have 50vsws from different years, the newer ones have the lighter clamp and the paint went off and the "aluminum" thingy started to get ugly. Replace it with custom golden ones and It will look purty.

If that's not what you talking about, sorry just gettin up

You think that the reel seat is a problem, wait until your 2 speen gear locks up because the c-clip that holds the 2 speed gear in place comes off, or the water intrusion that comes throught the cam and shaft rusts you main shaft bearing shut. I work on reels and have for the last 20 years. Unfortunately Penn forsake their old bullet proof TW series reels for these P.O.S. V series reel is beyond me. They have had nothing but problems since they have come out. The new V series 80's especially have a problem with the c-clips coming off the 2 speed gear and the V series 70s have the major water intrusion in the cam and shaft to rust up the bearings. Boy I wish they would s**t can these reels and go back to the old TW series. Yes, they were heavier and didn't look as space age as the new ones, but they always worked, and could be easily fixed. Now Penn is starting to discontinue some of the older reel parts! Is't that lovely? that was one of the last things that you could always say about Penn. You could always get parts for them. Well, not any more!

Got any good news for me? Geez- never heard this B4 about the VSW~ I guess fortunately for me- my rods have never seen any burning line and screaming drags yet- only soapy water & fresh onshore rinse-downs

I also picked up 2- 30 TWs last year on that special sale they ran in '07~ are those gonna STB too, eventually.

Seriously though, I'm cruising the internet looking for those nice machined aluminum (above replacement for 'reel seat enforcement')~ can't find anything yet.

Anyone else out there know where to find replacement parts like above pic?

It's a sad thing to have to replace a stock part with something aftermarket because of manufacturing deficiencies, but the machined gold ones do look sweet!

Joe any maintenance tips to keep that from happening, like replacing the c-clips at some interval?
