BassPro usually carries the aftermarket reel clamps as well.

Instead of powder coating, you may waht to have them re-anodized - Reel Colors does a fine job in just about any color you could want.

I can get you parts from Reel Colors. They have very nice reel clamps.
    Thanks,

If so, it's not your fault, Penn has this problem. I have 50vsws from different years, the newer ones have the lighter clamp and the paint went off and the "aluminum" thingy started to get ugly. Replace it with custom golden ones and It will look purty.

If that's not what you talking about, sorry just gettin up

I fished with some friends over the weekend and theirs looked like ass. I also know he takes good care of them, they don't get used much and they are serviced every year.

On a $600 reel, they should send out a $5 replacement part without any question. In fact, they should just send every service location a box of 25 just to get started.

    Easy solution

To fix the problem, just sell your Penns to a buddy who fishes two or three times a year, then invest in a set of Shimanos or Avets. I am completely with Capt. Joe Shute on this one. The Penn Int'l II series (TWs) were great reels. The V series is pretty much garbage. I have seen a clicker button shoot straight out of the sideplate on the reel's second trip, on a friggin' dolphinfish! Constant buying and selling of that company, combined with the fact that most of the Penn Int'l is built overseas (then partially assembled in PA) have really caused a problem with that company. I hope other reel manufacturers will learn from their mistakes. When you have a top-tier product (as Penn once was) don't start cutting corners. If something ain't broke--don't fix it!

i just recently replaced a backing plate on my 30vsw due to corrosion. it cost me $30 for a new one at my local tackle shop and guess what a week later after purchasing it is happening again. Dont even get my started on the reel it self biggest piece of shit. i am now slowley switching to shimano tiagras, and staying with my older penn tw's.

not only are my reel seats doing the same... just had the c-clip push off and lost low gear on one of my 50vsw's... while it the middle of a stand up battle with a 89" BFT. got lucky and landed the fish without the reel locking up solid, but having a reel lock up it that position could place someone in a very dangerous situation of getting jerked overboard or worse. Sending the reel back to penn for repair. Hopefully they will at least stand behind their product and get the problem corrected. I'll give updates as to how it turns out.

Talked to guys at penn today. They were very helpful and told me to get it to them and the problem would be taking care of. I inquired as to the replacement parts and found that they have corrected the defect in them and that the c-clip problem should not happen again. Let you know how it turns out.

jon, hope they get that straightened out for you. if not, call me and i will give you the new guys name at pure fishing (berkley) who is handling their account. there is also a good webstore for getting parts for penn reels, it is simply www.pennparts.com. they are filling a real need with as many people that own penn int'l reels and have a desire for them to work right and they know their stuff! penn has been sending us reels that lack parts (backing plates, handle nuts, mounting hardware) and refusing to send us the parts later. so we end up paying another retailer for parts that should have been included. wow. at least there's someone that can help.

by the way, congrats on your fish the other day. you guys staying up there for awhile?
