Recently aquired a couple of Penn 50 VSWs. On one of them, I can't get the drag to tighten down. I turn the drag dial (not the lever) and nada... reel stays in free spool... thoughts??

I hear ya Sister, adding to the arsenal is always a good thing. Are those the new model Penns that just came out or the International V's?
Been doing anything exciting lately?
Sure u are but?
Are you backing the lever all the way off before adjusting the drag knob.
If one is ok and one is not, most likely an issue with that reel internally, whoever u bought it from should do a quick swap out for you, dont mess with it yourself.
Good luck, they are sweet new reels... mine have been working great this season..
I looked at a new 50 and 70 VSW last week and I had to completely back off the drag before the adjustment knob would push in and turn.
FOUL HOOK'd
PG, thanks for the shout. Only out to the deep once since we fished. Did OK, a couple more wahoo and BLT, VA style. Lately, though, been bottom fishing the local wrecks and doing so-so... Can't wait for it to fire up again. The 50's are the V's. I got 4 of them at an estate auction really cheap. I guess the Okumas are gonna be teaser reels![]()
ANYWAY!! I did get the reel fixed. Appearently, I had NOT backed the drag down enough to get any action from the dial. Thanks for the replies. Certainly helped me.
WTG fellas!! thats what its about!!Something as simple as tightening a drag. Its things like that that will drive you crazy. we twist, turn, pull, bang and the darn thing still wont work!! If it wont work it will make you want to throw it across the room!! Glad you guys chimed in!!

bitemysis, are these new reels, if not why not spend another 15 or 20 bucks and have them gone over, sure is a hell of a lot cheaper than spending all the money to fish , only to have a mechanical railure. best of luck...dave
