How will a torium 20 do with 15 plus ounces of lead plus a 40 pound cod? I guess the rod determines that?

When using braid do I need any special kind of rod guides such as silicon nitride or carbide?

When I used to wreck fish from party boats I used an 8 foot Star graphite rod with an Ambassadore Ten. The reel had a little slop in the handle due to the way it was made, but it never failed. Four seasons I used that reel and never opened it. I used this rig for dropping straight down. Very sensitive, I used braid for a while but found I didn't really need it to detect bites. The graphite transmits very good..When the fish bites the bait and tried to drag it back to the wreck a graphite rod bends less/giving the fish less line. Allso thats where the braid with no stretch comes in handy. I like a reel with a medium retrive for wreck fishing. I like a high speed reel for mid depth jigging and surface casting

The casting rod I used was an 8 foot Lamiglass rod made at Sea Isle. 8 ounces of lead was a touch lite for casting, but give 'er ten ounces and I could work the corner like no other. That rod had a prefect heavy action bend when loaded. it would shoot the bait out like a rocket. I used the same Ambassadur reel.

I tried squiders- too heavy. Newells - broke the handle on two of um, big Diawa- too big, 50h too heavy but second best over all

this was over ten years ago
