    offshore reel

I am adding 4 rods to my spring/fall striper spread which consists currently of 10 330gtis. However as my boy gets older I may be more inclined to give the schoolie bluefin tuna bite a shot. This leads me to want to get some reels that can do double duty. I want to stick with 30#class gear and am down to two reels. Being a penn guy my gut says just get some senator 113H's and be done with it but my buddies have told me to go for the shimano TLD20's. Durability wise since I am not the best at maintaining my reels, are the TLD's as tough?

the 113s will be fine as would the tlds. Both very durable reels and are almost indestructable. Although I would go for the tld 25 for the extra line capacity

    Every single one of 'em.

    TLDs

    Hey Faithful,
I asked the same question regarding my own reels.
I'm fishing TLD 25 and I wondered whether they were adequate to fish near shore / off shore.
I was told the TLD 25s, currently spooled with 30 lb. were fine and it was recommended to me that I also consider adding a couple of TLD 30s or even TLD 50s.
I intend to take my Bay game to ocean this year also.
    Good luck,

    GScott

the 113's and the tld25's are ok for small school tuna and mahi...you'll want to step up to some 30's and 50's if you are heading offshore with the intentions to catch big fish.

The larger class gear will perform much better for you and last alot longer...

Greg - I got you covered for the reel maintenance part!!!

    Greg,

I second the TLD25s as a great all around selection. We have caught tunas up to 100 lbs on them. Used to also run TLD15s and we did fine, fish up to 60 lbs on them.

I say go with the TLD25s. They will serve you well.

I know you mentioned the tld 25s and the senators. Penn makes the " graphlite " reels and that's what I pull for whites and have caught 120 pound bluefin. All in all you really can't go bad with either but I'm a lever drag guy myself.

TLD 25 are great reels. I would stay with lever drags. I am upgrading my 3 year TLD 50 which are in great shape to tigras. I am having custom rods built now so i have a complete set of tiagras on custome rods I have 3 TLD 50 on star handcraft rods with all guides that I am going to sell that are in great shape. If you interested for $900

There is a reason that majority of charter boats on the coast uses TLDs. They take a punding day in and day out and the drags stay smooth.

The TLD 25 is ideal for whites, dolphin and small to med tunas.

if you have a boat that you can turn and chase a fish if needed a tld 25 will catch almost anything out there except for BIG sharks giant bluefin and marlin.
