    New rod builder question

I have just started building for fun and have a question. I wrap the rod with the thread colors I want, but after applying the finish they aren't even close to the same color anymore. What is the deal? I see all these bright brilliant colors on everyones rods and I just can't get that. Even if I use pastel colors they come out dull once the finish is applied. Someone please help me out. Thanks.

What finish are you using? Is it fresh?

Some people use color preservative, but I never have

I'm using Flex coat high build finish...and I just opened it a month ago maybe. I have bought some Flex coat color preserver and tried that as well, but it still dulled it down. I am using untreated thread because I read that it allowed the finish to soak into the threads better and provide a stronger finish for the guides. Does it have anything to do with the thread?

I recommend using Gudebrod thread and Threadmaster high build for my finish. For years I have used Flexcoat but this year I made the switch to Threadmaster and will NEVER go back to Flexcoat. In my opinion Threadmaster finish levels better and drys faster than Flexcoat.

Why do you recommend using Gudebrod? Its much more expensive for the amount you get than madeira. Is the difference the finish not dulling the colors?

I'll try threadmaster finish next time. I am placing an order today or tomorrow for a few things. If there are any other recommendations please let me know and also why you recommend it.

    Thanks, Mitch

Have heard of people having trouble with regular maderia thread. There metallic stuff is the SH!T though from what I hear. I use gudebrod and flex coat high build. Have no problems. I have a buddy that turned me on to threadmaster and when my flex coat runs out I'm going ot try that.
