    New gear

Well as from my introduction I am getting into fishing. And now I wanted to know what I should get for a setup for deepsea fishing and shoreline fishing. Like What rod and reel to get or a combo package for the bang for my buck. Also I want to know peoples opinions on lines from mono to braided. Because I was talking to this guy who said mono is better for casting and then back it up with braided. Well those are my question and thanks for all your guys help for helping me.

braided is definitely better for casting because it is much limper, but it also takes an experienced fisherman because of the tendency to wind knot and get unfixable backlashes that can result in some expensive cutting. I would sugget a 7-8' spinning rod with a spinning reel that holds about 350-300 yards of 20 lb mono. Just depends on how much you want to spend. A longer rod will give you more distance casting from the shore but will become a hindrance on the boat.

Well no more than 40 for the line and 50-100 for the rod and reel unless I have to go a little more like 150.

    I would say... Google rivermarine.com

They have killer deals on rods and reels and on a bunch of other stuff too. You can grab a few nice setups for cheap.

I just bought a bunch of star rods from them and they have been great rods for the boat and they were like 50 bucks!!!

I also bought some more shimano baitrunners to put on the rods. These are a pretty cheap reel and they hold up really well for most decent sized fish. They run between 95 and 120 bucks depending on the size you get. I was catching 20-60lb amberjacks on these setups (baitrunner 4500 and 6500s) all day a few weeks ago and never had an issue with the rod or reels. An Amberjack WILL put your gear to the test!!!

I just use ande mono but there is a ton of stuff out there and everyone has their favorite. Ande costs about 10 bucks for a 350yd spool of 25lb mono.

So basically... you can get a nice rod/reel/line for under 175 bucks. As far as what pairs up to what, this might get you started.

    Medium duty
    4500 shimano baitrunner
Star Aerial stand-up rod EX1220SUS. this is a 12-20lb class rod
15lb mono or 30lb briaded line

    Heavier duty
    6500 shimano baitrunner
Star Aerial stand-up rod EX 2040SUS. 20-40lb class rod
25lb mono or 50lb braided line.

All of the above can be purchased at the same place I mentioned above and they are the cheapest prices I have found lately.

    Ok here is the disclaimer

Some guys on this site are gonna bash baitrunners b/c they are graphite reels. I have personally fished baitrunners for years and have never had one fail due to the graphite frame. They do not have the strongest drags out there but they are decent reels that will last a long long time and they are very versatile. I actually have a pair of 4500s that are about 8 yrs old and they still come on every trip!!! That is just my 2 cents though. Hope it helps you out.

    Cheers,

    Dave
