I had the same question about the reversed guide and wondered if it was really required. I fished a off the shelf brand rod that had a 150# crank on with a loop to loop connection and noticed the slap you would get on the first guide from the heavy leader and with the dacron loop to loop connection. I guess the reversal will reduce this.
Back in February at the show in High Point, I had a long conversation with the guys at Fuji and they demo'ed the guides and their ability to "shed" line. He wrapped 4 revolutions around the guide and then pulled on one end and the line just came right off the guide! It was pretty cool.
where can you buy the oti popping blanks? i've looked all over the internet but cant seem to find anyone that carries them.
Paul has them.
Send him a PM.

Nice thread work Andrew...looks pretty sweet.
Those are Shimano's K series guides I believe you are referring to. The ones Andrew used look like MNSG's to me. In order for the K series to work properly you can't reverse the first guide. They are on a slight angle and would therefore put the reversed guide pointing toward the reel seat and unable to shed line wrapped around it at all. It would in fact do the reverse job if it was reversed.
