Chum,
How did you get that marbled finish - is that a tape or decal? If so, would be interested in where you got it as I am looking to do some rod building myself.
Chum,
As everyone else has already pointed out, very nice job on the first rod.
Couple of questions....
How long did it actually take to build the rod.. actual hours ?
Cost for all of the parts and pieces....
I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing . I need six new stand-up rods and cannot afford to have the custom rods made for me... way too much scratch.
Those rods look great. I would also be interested in the time it took. I am interested in rod building just not sure I can find the time. Thanks for sharing the info. Great stuff.
Total time? I'd guess a week, maybe a week and a few days. Most of it is drying time. You'll spend some time getting the underwraps, guides lined up and 1st wraps. After than, less than an hour. Put on a coat of flex coat. Watch it dry. Put on another... LOL But, I did spend quite a few nights practicing the marbling on some old beaten and broken rods before trying it for real. I read how to do it right here. Surf around, ask questions.
Shoe's thread has a ton of info. Paul did a video on marbling and there's numerous other posts about it. And Grady did a video on ramps (and leather grips). Snoop around. There's a lot of info right here. Marbling is pretty straight forward. (geez, I built one rod and now I'm and "expert" LOL) Mix the finish with Testors paint (the kind you use for model cars and planes). It's not hard. But does take practice. That armbreaker dude has it dialed in.
I'm building two of the shoefish specials. Then two high end rods (once I get the hang of it ) Each shoefish rod cost about 100 clams. I saved some $$$ re-using aftco roller guides off those old broken rods I mentioned. And shoe let me borrow his rod wrapper. Thanks shoe!
I made plenty of mistakes on the first rod. You'd never know to look at it. But I know where there are. The 2nd one is coming out mint! It's fun and you will save some coin. A win-win situation
I'll post up rod #2. It should be done this week. It won't look identical to #1 because I learned a lot from that.
Here's rod #1 with a 30 lb load. I wouldn't push this blank any higher. Perfect for a 30 or 50. Can't wait to stick a bluefin on it!! whooowahhh
