Like many of you when I’m not fishing I’m somehow trying to prepare for fishing. Since I have already tied enough Sea Witches for my grandkids to use I figured the next logical step for me would be to try my hand at wrapping rods.
I fished with Paul (Paul708) this summer and saw some of the rods he tied in action and I had him build me a jigging rod this last fall. I then met Kevin (Flat Liner) at Box’s house in Dec during the Wing fest. Kevin spent a good bit of time talking with me between cooking batches of wings. Then Kevin started putting up the video’s on rod building and that pushed me to just do it.
I asked some questions read some books and watch everyone of Kevin’s video’s more than once and off I went.
Here is my first rod it is a jigging rod for my son Daniel. I kept it very simple for the first go. Everything went pretty smooth, I did learn some things that you can only learn from doing. First was any imperfection will be magnified when you finish the rod. My main ones where; in the planning of the butt wrap it is a little uneven up by the first guide, I had my wife write his name with a paint pen, but when I started to apply flew coat to cover it started to rub off a little bit. I need to spend more time making sure EVERY thread is perfect or it shows up in the end.
Over all I’m very happy knowing I built a very functional rod, that he will get lots of enjoyment using.
Please feel free to post any recommendations or criticisms so that I can improve on my future rods.
