Making a split grip jigging rod.

Well, I have been back and forth for a while if I actually "need" a jigging rod. I have a snapper stick I use for that now, but its long, composite, and has a slick butt on it which chaffs my arm pit something fierce. I finally decided to build one. I went to Mudhole and parted one out there at the store.

I have had no love for the split grips until I tried one off shore. I then realized the benefits they offer. So I decided to make one to match an Accurate Boss I have that I don't like at all for bottom fishing. I am tall, so I decided to do a 10 inch split in the grip, but as I was building it, I decided to go a little shorter.... now hovering around 8.5 inches w the split. Front grip is small in diameter, 10 inches long and very little taper to it. I had to customize the rear grip. I plan on doing a little shaping to the front grip when all is said and done.

    Some pics.

Unfortunately, I have a problem. When I went to Mudhole, I asked for one of their 40-60 class blanks. They brought one out to the counter and we did all the sizing off of that. I also had them chop 3 inches from the tip.

When I am back home 2 hrs away, I notice the receipt shows I was charged for a 20-40 class rod. I looked up the rods model number, and wouldn't you know it, I have a 20-40 class rod. Always something. I called them, they said that if I want to switch blanks, then to let them know... but for now I am going to build it and see if it will work.

Back to the build. So I just did my guide spacing, and mocked it up w tape to see if its going to have any areas touching the rod. All looks good. I am doing a normal build... just can't bring myself to do an acid wrap.

So thoughts? Concerns? Anyone ever had any issues w a 20-40 class rod loaded up w 50# braid?

Also, I want to do a pattern in the split section... my concern is that the rod holders will beat it to death. Anyone have any experience w that?

Rod Holders WILL beat it to death. Your best option for that is to use a 2 part west system or some other hard finish on the split. It is much harder than rod finish and will withstand the beating. That, or just don't put the rod in a holder.

The rod wil be fine with 50 in my opinion. Roll with it. You will get good action and good jigging action with that setup.

or just get a pool floaty and cut it to fit around the split while its in the holder. Or any foam tube that works for you. your in florida so i assumed you would have access to a pool floaty

Too funny. I actually told my buddy that. I imagine it would work (or pipe insulation). I am not opposed to knicks and dings, but the more I can avoid, the better.

So its "west System" Flatliner? I looked it up on Google and found it. Is it flexible at all or should I expect the "cracking effect" once I load it up?

Thanks for the vote of confidence in the blank. I will be honest Flatliner... I am scared its going to break as soon as I use it (all jigging blanks freak me out with how much they bend)... I have trout rods w more @$$ than this. But the guy at the store had me hold it and then bent it to the floor. It sure looked strong after that.

Yep. Flex shouldn't be an issue because its so far down the blank. If you have flex in the butt section, that means the rod is flexing under the foregrip and reelseat and then you are probably going to be catapulted overboard!!!!!!! MORE ACCURATELY, THE ROD WOULD PROBABLY FAIL AT THE FRONT OF THE REELSEAT AS THAT WILL NOT FLEX.

Seriously, think about the flex and force that has to be applied to the blank to make it bend all the way to the gimbal!!

You are worried about breakage??? You mean like this!!!

This is a Mudhole CBVJ6040 (Same blank as yours) that I built up for a friend for bass and blues. He used it on a Blueshark for a pitchbait rod with an Avet MXL. Still in one piece; at his request, I added a graphite gimbal to the end of it for next season! These rods are pretty strong! The 30-50# is rated for 20# fighting, 25# max drag.
