    maintenance for roller guides

What kind of oil/lubricant should I be using on my aftco roller guides?

I have some that are starting to stick. I want to take them off the rod and lubricate them correctly.

    Thanks for the input.

    You'd probably just laugh
Check the aftco site, I think it recommended the penn reel lube or something similar.

Twice a year I take about 3' of Dacron and wrap it around the roller twice, spray it with wd40 and pull it back a forth for about 20 sec. Done deal.

A shot of wd-40 every couple of trips does the trick.

Personaly i do not use WD40 for a lube it make a good cleaner and helps free things up but it has solvents in it and dries out. I would use a drop or 2 of penn oil or reel ex after a good cleaning.

I have a lot of tubes of Penn Reel lube laying around. Maybe I'll give that a try.

    John,

Maybe one of the rod building pros can jump here. I believe the roller guides are sealed and self packed. The wd40 acts not as a lube but as a cleaner. Personally I don't like oil on my rollers, I want them to spin, I don't want them to be all oily and gooey.

Penn lube is the ticket for AFTCO rollers, that's what I use and it lasts a long time without washing out.

Some are ball bearing, so beware....but the older bushing types should be dis-assembled (no short-cuts please) and can be cleaned with wd40, but lube with lightest mobil 1 synthetic oil u can find or Penn reel lube. Wd 40 just goes away too easy...bo-shield is better but bushings need oil not grease or wash-away sprays....imho.
Some rollers may need brass wool to clean-up contact areas with fishing line(s). Oils are on the inside of bushing areas not on the outside of the roller itself....agreed, u don't want it dripping or oozing to expose it to the fishing line.
