    Looking for options

Just bought a used Penn 50 VSW it is spooled with 80lb moi moi mono.

The issue is that it looks like it needs more line.

What are my options as far as how to reliably connect more line?

    thanks guys

Frankly if it is mono line, you'd be better off stripping it all off and respooling - all of maybe $20 worth of line.

While you are at it, you may want to consider putting a base of braid and a couple hundred yards of mono as a topshot - replace the topshot only going forward.

A 50VSW will probably hold about 550 - 650 yds of 80 Mono - Ande, Momoi are fairly decent lines - probably in the $40 range if you have it spooled at a local tackle shop.

I usually buy bulk spools and spool more than 1 reel at a time - that will save you a good bit.

When I ran the Predator boat, we used only suffix line. The 50s held enough 80 pound to do everything we wanted to do. Never got spooled or had a line break. Great knot strength and abrasion resent. Clt Capt. is spot on with his recommendation. I would buy a bulk spool and re-spool my reels myself. 5 gal bucket filled with water, remove the handle and insert an arrow shaft for the spool to ride on. Keep the hose running to keep the bucked full and wet pack your mono.

get rid of the line as you really don't know how old it is. As mentioned above try to buy in bulk. I buy at least one 5lb spool every year and redo my 50's. You can get a 5lb spool of diamond for about $160 and spool quite a few reels. I have done the wet pack method but if you can get a friend to apply pressure to the spool not the line that will work as well. Put a rod through the spool and have him push it down on a piece of old carpet.
