It's time to select reels for offshore. I'm wondering why....

It's time to select reels for offshore. I'm wondering why people like certain manufacturers over others.

I have a bunch of Shimano Tiagra 50 wides, and a couple of 80's. I also have a couple of Penn 30's and a 50.

But other than the 80's the gear is tired, slightly blemished but has served me well. So I'm thinking of getting all new matching stuff.

I've used a bunch of the new Penn reels and found them to be good. But since it's been over 10 years since I last purchased an offshore reel, besides Penn, Shimano what other reels should I seriously consider?

    Anyone have any suggestions.

I'm just considering trolling gear at the moment. 30's 50's and either 70's or 80's depending on the size that the manufacturers make.

The next bite on a jig.
Ordinarily I would say Tiagra's for their power and smooth drag, but I just wonder in this case if some customs from the Penn Custom shop might be just right.

I was considering the Custom Shop. Any idea what the premium is for the custom shop stuff?

You may want to get the tiagras and have Reel Colors engrave and color them for you - http://www.reelcolors.com/index.html

Just like the boat, you can get one of a kind custom - Penn tends to be rather stock in their offerings...

They will also do your older reels - everything can match...

Clt_Capt, I've had that site as one of my favorites for some time now. I like there teaser reels so much that I sent it to the tower builder.

My existing Tiagra's a not beat to crap, just so light scratches, I wonder if they only reanodize new reels.

bigfish4me, I think I'd stay away from those reels because of the fact that service is probably limited.

They will re-anodize older reels. I asked at one time about getting rid of boat rash - they will do it - just a shop charge for polishing if the scratches don't come out when they srtip the original anodize...

That's great. I just sent Tom and e-mail. They're only about 45 minutes down the road from me.

Even with the polishing, I'll be able to use my older reels and get the "S" that's on my transom engraved into them.

I asked him about making a couple of teaser reels for the hard top.

    Thanks for the info.

It seems like a no brainer at this point.

The only thing I need to do now is pick a flavor. Since the boat is fighting lady yellow, I'm thinking blue or orange may look nice.

Although I've never seen orange colored reels.

Since clt_capt mentioned reelcolors, I'd suggest getting these (at least play around with a reel that has it)

It's sooo comfy its incredible, makes fishing a breeze, the angles on it are genius.

It's night and day difference fishing with it.
