hook sharpening

Hey Guys,
Can anyone give me some tips on sharpening game hooks I am using Mustard 7691 in both duratin and stainless 8/0 to 12/0's

any help please, wanna know if i'm doing it right

Aloha Marty,

Here's how I sharp mine. Take two 1/8" round chain saw file and tape or shrink wrap both ends. File point at an angle between the groove 'til sharp. Test sharpness on your thumb nail. Hope this helps.

Thanks Kukoa I will give that a go and with a bit of sandpaper to hone the point I reckon that will work a treat. I hadn't even thought about doing it that way.I used a staight file and got a pretty good point(did get a blue of around 500#on the gold coast of oz) so i guess it had to be reasonably sharp.

There is a boat of that same name fishing the heavy tackle season in Cairns as we speak and doing ok as well. not that many big fish most around the 400-500#mark. Just a bit of trivia.

I USE THE 7691 AND 7692 MYSELF AND I TRY TO REFRAIN FROM USING ANY S/S HOOK....EVERYONE PREACHES BILLFISH RELEASE WITH THEIR LAST BREATH AND WE WERE FORCED INTO THE CIRCLE HOOK CRAP IN THE NAME OF CONSERVATION.....SO I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE, IF ONE CATCHES A BILLFISH ON AN ARTIFICIAL LURE WITH S/S HOOKS....YOU CANNOT ALWAYS RETRIEVE THE NEVER RUSTING S/S HOOKS.........( CONSERVATION MY ASS)

I PREFER A #10 BASTARD FILE WHICH NEVER LEAVES MY GARAGE UNLESS I CAN'T FIND IT....IN THAT CASE I RUN BACK TO WALLY WORLD AND BUY YET ANOTHER ONE FOR ONLY $3.95...

PUT IT ON A BOAT AND A FILE IS OVER WITH ...DONE...SEE YA LATER ......IT'S RUSTOLA TIME...

NOTHING IS FINER THAN A NEW 10 INCH FILE!


I UTILIZE THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE FILE...PULLING THE HOOK DOWN THE FILE AWAY FROM ME.....FOCUSING ON THE TIP AND NOT THE EDGES.....I REMOVE ANY HUMP ON THE BACKSIDE OOF THE POINT ITSELF

WHEN I AM DONE, THE TIP IS THE THICKNESS OF A HAIR AND BARELY VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE

MAKE NO CUTTING EDGE....TRUST ME

A HOOK WILL DULL IT'S POINT BY JUST BEING PULLED THRU THE WATER

SO...WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EVERY FISH ATTACKS IT?

i do agree with marty on this.. not only because of the ss does not leave the fish but also i think the duratin is much harder!!

maybe i am wrong but i think they are personally and hold better.. justmy opinion

Dremel hand rotary tool with diamond bit.....by far the easiest, safest and best tool to sharpen hooks.

As Marty says ... just my way and not the only way...

Heavier gear and heavier trolling drag requires a stouter hook point. Sharpen a hook point too fine and you will get rollovers. The flipside is that with lighter gear and lighter drag you can get away with a finer point, and the thinner the hook the easier it will set. I like a four sided diamond point on the mustad big game hooks but dull the inside edge and file off most of the barb. Needle points are easier to create and I use them with lighter hooks.

I prefer stainless hooks for lurefishing because they hold their point longer. The hook point of a cad plated hook will deteriorate faster when lurefishing (although still reasonable if its a single hook rig with the point outside the skirt). I avoid removing the hooks by hand and even if a stainless hook is left in the fish it doesn't worry me. I know I'd rather a dentist break off a stainless needle in my mouth than a cad plated one.

Japanese hooks (Owner etc) get rigged electrolysis proof and as long as they stay sharp I avoid touching them with a file.

A file can be protected to some extent by giving it a rub with oil and storing it in either an oil soaked rag or a heavy plastic bag with some oil on the inside. They will still go blunt in the end but storing them this way helps get more use out of them. I have heard the rust can be removed by soaking them in vinegar or similar acidic solution?

This is true but you need to remember, once it gets to the point of rust, a vinegar bath removes the rust which was once your file. Hence dulling the file. Trash it and splurge the $3.00 for a new one and just keep a stone on the boat for touch ups.
