    Help needed for finish problem

I finished a rod last week, and must have not used enough hardener in the final batch. Its flexcoat high build and never hardened completely.

Then to make matters worse, since it was a chrismas present the wrapping paper stuck to a couple wraps.

Once I get the paper off, can I just put one more coat of finish on the rod, or do I somehow need to get the bad coat off first? I was thinking a hot batch might cure the soft stuff too

I have had that happen before too.

I wiped it down with alcohol and applied a thin coat. It worked well. The alcohol should remove the wrapping paper too.

From what I gather problems like that almost always come down to poor mixing. Now I make sure I thouroughly mix the epoxy. If you watch the batch it will turn cloudy while you mix, then turn clear. I mix it for a good minute after it turns clear just to make sure.

    Hope that helps.

JPR CUSTOM RODS Best Custom Rods at Great Prices.
doug , clean it up mix another batch and apply.

if you have that problem, it is usually a bad mix,
if you are mixing small batches it is easier to make a mistake with the mix.
using a larger batch, give a little more room for error in mix.
and you will usually have less problems when mixing bigger batches.
you will be using more epoxy..but may have less problems.
    its a good trade off

Thanks guys, glad to hear I can just put on another coat. That makes it easy

It was my own fault, rushing to finish before Christmas and I didn't measure accurately

Temperature needs to be consistent as well as mixing perfectly. If it is too cold it can be as difficult as a women with PMS.

Apply a new thin coat on top of that one and you should be fine.

Don't know what you are measuring with, but the epoxy SPECIFIC (no silcone) syringes are super easy to use and marked on the side for easy reading.

A great tip as well is to mix no less than 3cc's of epoxy and 3cc's of hardner. Like Paul said, the more you mix, the more room for error. Less you mix, less room for error.

Also, if you drill a hole in the top of the lid of the epoxy and hardner, that is the same or slightlyy smaller size than the syringe tip, you can store the syringe in the top and just simply turn the bottle upside down and withdraw the epoxy/hardner with the syringe. Squeeze out epoxy, pull syringe back a bit, and store back in hole.

Pretty fool proof and can be used over and over again.

Mudhole sells some pumps - Just like a lotion bottle. They fit the Aftcote Qt size perfectly - 1 pump resin, 1 pump hardener - never fails...If you can count ...

I think 2 of the pumps is about 4 bucks... Much easier than syringes, and a whole lot less mess.

If you are familiar with West System Epoxy and the pumps they supply, this is very similar...
