handle length

I'm building an inshore rod from a St Croix (2sw80hf) - 8' fast taper, 17-40 line.
Usually I use 12" eva with a fuji tapered butt cap which is about 2", that make total butt length 14". Problem I've had is when switching hands the butt would get stuck on my jacket or whatever. With this rod I'm thinking of using 10" eva making total butt length 12".
Do you think that would be too short for a conventional rod?

Hold he rod in your hands like you are fishing. You want the butt to be at or just in front of your elbow.
