Also the lures we use a really heavy. 36-42 oz mojos minimum.

I like roller guides because I use a lot of wind on spro swivels for everthing and they will knock the inserts out of ring guides.
wish I could help you Paul, I don't fish wire set ups. I will call my bro in fort pierce. He has a wire set up for wahoo trolling out front.......I am pretty sure it is a penn reel but the rod is not popping up right now....get back to ya
ps he uses a custom cigar weight in front of the lure consisting of many oz's(48). I think it is a wahooking setup.
I played some tonight. I have pictures. Don't think you're going to like the results. The big guide did better than the small one. The small one got a flat spot after 16 pulls. The bigger guide did better than I thought but it to flat spotted and grooved. PM me your email address and I'll send the pics. I also snapped a shot of my wire line rod with the rollers for a reference.
I went to your website today. Nice site. You make some very pretty and functional rods by the looks of things. I really liked your roller guided offshore rods. I could see them with a 50W all bowed up under the strain of a 70 + lb yellowfin. Great looking stuff you got there!!!!!
Craig
What little wire lining I have done is with swivel roller tip and some super tough "carballoy?" guids. big heavy rings. That was with monel wire though. I might suggest going with the rollers with multi strand cause I envision that rough stuff litterally filing right through the guides on a hot run...
Thanks for doing the test BYRD. i thought we would get a bigger responce from wire line guys.. but thanks to the guys who replied..
For my wire I like 20 lb blanks- all rollers, stranded wire will eat up both carboloy and ceramic after a fairly short period of time. It will also eat up rollers but you can change out the rollers when it does. The swivel tip is a nice touch. The old fenwick 20 lb blanks were far and away the finist wire line rods I have ever used. No need for any noodle action in the middle fast or very fast taper all the way for me. And since we are talking wire, those 320 and 420 GTI reels that everyone raves about- i feel are junk. They are overmatched with wire and have trouble getting those big ass mojo's back to the boat in my opinion much less a couple 20 or 30 lb rockfish. The level wind is the only good thing about them. Give me a penn 3/0 or 4/0 for my wire. Oh, but we were talking about rods weren't we,lol- As far as my other rods go I prefer the ceramic guides all the way except for the tips which I prefer to be rollers on my trolling rods. Thats just a personel thing I guess, i think the rods have a better "feel" with all ceramics and a roller tip. Bottom fishing rods- all ceramic, 5 1/2'- 6' fast taper with some ass !!!
Miles thanks for the write up,, yeah we were talking about guides, and what you said about them seems right on. i like the ceramic guides also. which is why i was stupid enough to try this. no not really..actually i didnt know he was using stranded till after we were set for the test..i just ASSumed it was monel..but now i know what they need guide wise..NOW to get the right Rod setup..20# blanks? other than fenwick, what do you like?
Just like Craig … 20 lb blanks 6-1/2’(old harnells that I wish I could find current copies of) , all roller, 40 lb monel, and 4/0 senators (in fact just replaced a pair of reels that were tired) The rods are a bit slower.
Now …what about SiC guides?. This is what all the spoon rods are being built with around these parts. Looking for a set of 8 foot spoon rods and this was the guide I was going with ….
As for other guides I could see a hardloy/hialoy wearing ….Fuji Cermet guides …never had them just heard about them, I guess is a carbide type guide?
Alconite stuff ?? I’ve got on some light inshore stuff … seems very hard, pleased so far but don’t know about wire with them.
