So here is a question, i built a rod on a satin finish blank. My buddy asked why I hadn't put finish on the entire rod. Is that a legit move? or does it crack when the blank bends?

I finish the whole blank on my offshore gear - It holds up just fine.
I repainted all my old spinning rods last year, brought them back to like new shape. Doesn't crack or affect the action
I am big on analogies and I have one for this. Its like buying a pair of dress shoes. My father always told me to immediately put polish on new shoes. That way, if I scuffed them, I scuffed the polish and not the leather.
Well, same applies here. By putting a coat of finish on my offshore rods (thin for jigging and a little thicker for standups and IGFA), if they ever get deck rash, you are scuffing the finish and not the blank. When they are refurbished at years end, scuffs can be cut out and new finish applied.

Thank you everyone for the re-assurance. Thats what I figured but have always used finished blanks already. Makes sense though. Tough to get an even finish though.
Which brand and type of finish do you guys prefer? I know there are a bunch out there. some with the non-yellowing.
What is everyone's favorite?
I like threadmaster best...but I've only been at this a year as a hobby so I'm sure you can get a better opinion than mine

I've used Threadmaster and Flexcote - I'm more comfortable with Flexcote - just because I've used it more
I exclusively use Threadmaster. (Not the lite)
