I typically finish the bimini twist with a series of half-hitches.
I have also seen it finished where a loop is placed under the wraps and then pulled back through.
I have alse seen a finish method that I am unfamimliar with and trying to learn more about.
After making the initial half hitch lock around one or two of the loop legs, it looked like the mate on the boat wrapped the line away from the knot(up), then unwound the line back down???? This is what I can't figure out.
The finished knot looked way nicer then the typical half hitches and was just as easier to tie?
Anyone know any other methods for finishing off the twist?
You can do a search for bimini twist and on you tube you can see a video on how to tie it. To finish the knot you do four reverse loops around both lines and pull it down as you will see in the video.
Try a half hitch around one leg, then another half hitch around the other pulling each tight. Then finish with 3 or 4 wraps around both legs and run the tag end back under the wraps. The wraps run down the loop away from the knot. Snug it up. Then put the loop around a door knob or something and pull the whole thing tight, tight, tight. You don't want the loop to slip. I put a dab of super glue on for good measure.
The 3-4 wraps are easier to tie than I described. It's hard to explain in text. But that's the general idea. A pics or vid would do more justice than my description.
Be sure to TEST your knots. If the bimini slips, you'll probably run into problems
Here's one that slipped.
The other end was an offshore swivel knot. When the bimini slips, one leg gets longer causing swivel knot to "open" and finally break well under the test strength.
Marlinmate, I know the finish that you are talking about, because it's the one I was taught. But, I don't really know how to describe it and right now my video camera is broke.
I feel it is superior to the half hitch method. Maybe Box can do a video?
After you tie the half hitches create a loop with the tag end.
Now wrap INSIDE of the loop 4 wraps TOWARD the half hitches. The loop and wraps will be kind of like a uni knot but backwards as your wraps are going towards the half hitchs.
Now "unwrap" with the loop 4 times while holding the tag end and mainline tought. "Unwrap" with the part of the loop closest to the half hitches.
Now pull the tag end tight and you'll see the tag pull underneath the loops creating a neat and snug finnish.
