    Electric Reels

looking for any info on Electric Reels.

What's the best all around set-up that can handle deep dropping for tiles, and also pull up a swordie daytime? Can this same set-up be used for trolling wire?

Electrician's out there??? Can a 12 V just be alligator clipped to a free battery, or do I need a transformer?

    What's a slave Battery?

Any links websites that might explain all this?

    Thanks, Kahi

Everyone likes to use the high dollar Kristals, etc. But, I use precision Auto Reels and I swear these things will catch it all. I've used them commercial fishing for a long time and they are the absolute heat. The HT PAR rigged with a 9/0 and wire line will put a dent in the wahoo population. They are light, extremely strong, and very durable.

we use the 1412 gh electra mate...

we hook this up with a new srtainless gear that electramate made for the penn 14/0 (they make the 12/0 part also.) this new reel will pull a swordfish and not worry about motor or gears. it also deep drops on anything from wreckfish to golden tiles.. we also have a diawa 1000 for lighter fish and shallow water. the precision is also a great electric reel motor we had them on 9/0's a long time ago

Agreed. Last week I tried to trade Butch one of my red ones for one of his black ones, but he wouldn't do it.

    Capt. John,

I used some of Anthony's reels king fishing back in I think 98-99. They wouldn't last a trip, kept limping back in with broken electrics. It sounds like he has got it figured out now. I hear alot of good with guy's using his gear bottom fishing. He was a very nice fella and good to deal with. I'm not trashing his gear, there is a learning curve to all of this. He was trying to make a better "mouse trap", sounds like he's gotten it together.Frank,SeaPower

Yeah, he's definately worked the bugs out. That's why I recommend him. Not to mention, he stands behind his product. If you have any problems, he'll take care of it. But, we put them through hell commercial fishing and they're still going strong. And these are several years old.

    Depends

Kahi - IMHO the answer to your questions depend somewhat on what gear you already have.

Many electric "reels" (not all, e.g. the Daiwa) are made to attach to a fishing reel; they are not reels in and of themselves but rather devices that crank an existing reel for you. If you look at the Fish-Ng site that Capt. John provided, you'll note that those particular "reels" are suitable for smaller conventional reels. If you already own those type reels, then the PAR reels may be what you want.

Out here where we fish deep, we generally use larger reels, like our older Penn 12/0 and such. If you already have reels like the larger Senators or even the gold Penn or Shimano reels, that you intend to use, then you might want to take a look at the Elec-tra-mate 1412 or 1380 electric "reels" like Questsportfishing suggests. One of my buddies hauled a 200-300# mako to the surface from 1000' down with a 1380.

If you don't already have any reels and are looking for a true electric reel, then take a look at the Daiwa line of electric reels which are fishing reels with the motor built-in, not attached like the PAR or E-T-M ones. I have another buddy who fishes one model of the Daiwas (can't remember which) and he loves them.

If the motor/reel has a power cord for connecting to an external battery then yes, you can connect directly to a battery of appropriate voltage without a transformer (transformers do not work on DC anyway). Recommend you not use alligator clips since they may not provide good enough contact especially when a boat is rocking and rolling; better to use ring lugs firmly tightened down under the wing nuts on the threaded posts present on marine batteries.

    Tight lines,
    lawaia

    Thanks

lawaia- Great response, very helpful indeed. Everyone one for that matter. Might be able to find used one in good shape and try it out, just worried about the wiring etc. and then zapping my electronics. Stay Tuned. Kahi

If you do decide to get a PAR, you can get it wired anyway you want. When you order one, call and explain what you want and how you want it. Each reel is made custom and can be either 12 or 24 volt. It's all up to you. Like I said, the advantage of the PAR is the size of the reel that puts out a ton of power, is lightweight, and very corrosion resistant. I prefer reels that attach to conventional reels because of the simplicity and ability to switch reels if I want. I can change a 6/0 reel that I'm using for grouper, to the 9/0 I'm using for swordfish in minutes with the change of a bracket. I use mine from everything from pulling dredges and teasers to fishing. I've been commercial fishing my whole life before I even got into sportfishing. I've used Electra-mates, kristals, and all other types of electric reels. The PAR reels are the best by far for hardcore use. BTW, I'm not sponsored by them or anything. They're just the best electric reel I've found.

I almost forgot, even though he might not have it on his website, they do make models for the 12/0 senators.

Kahi for sword droping i would go with a kristal 651 you might get by with a 621 but you can do it all with a 651. If you were just going to bottom fish inside of 130+/- ft then a precision would do you just fine. Kristals need no boxs or anything other than 12/24 volts of clean power. Just remember that the whole set up is only as good as its drag system.
