    In addition, the water pressure against increasing lengths/surface areas of line tends to increase the tension on the line even at a given drag setting.

    ie. a reel that's been emptied to half spool will have a line more likely to break than one that was only half-filled to begin with.

    I asked the same question over the winter and got this from Tom Blecker at Penn.

    "Hello john.....How are you? I just took a 50VSW reel to the scale we have here in the service dept.With the drag set at 28 lbs. at strike,I took it right up to the full position. I pulled a easy 48 lbs. out of it. I still had free spool left,so I would imagine you could get a easy 60 lbs. of drag at full before maxing out the reel and losing free spool."

    I took a 50VSW and duplicated this on my own scale.

    I am running 80 mono and 130 braid on my 50VSW's and have the 80 mono reels at 20lbs at strike and the braid reels at 25lbs.
