deep drop bent butt with rollers?

Anyone every use a bent butt on a deep drop rod and then use rollers instead of guides? One of my buddies swears that it would be easier cranking than the more popular tackle that is being used now.

He wants to put a 9/0 penn loaded with 50lb braid on the rod and leave it in the holder and just crank.

Anyone have any experience with doing that? What size bent butt would be needed and how many rollers would you use? I almost think like a longer type planer rod is what he wants, but thought I'd ask the experts.

    Any input is appreciated.

Yep. Use 3 rollers and a swivel top. UB2 would be fine.

Craig, look over at places like 100fathom club and other deep drop sites. Its pretty common for the guys using electrics ans 15 pounds of weight to use rollers on their rods. I dont think it would be of a great advantage as braid itsself is pretty slick and todays newer guide inserts disapate heat much better than the old school carbaloy and stainless ring guides that they were designed to replace many years ago. But if the customer wants it, build it!!!

As for the choice in braid, Id bump it to 80 or 100 and fish 10 hook rigs if I were building a rod to be left in the holder. (This might also help with the problem of getting braid caught in between the roller and frame of the guides- mainly the tip.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try to build it for him. He has been after me to it for some time I just keep saying I dunno man that's a big rod for dropping you sure. He kept saying something about a roller is like a pulley and pulleys reduce work or something such as that.

Danny thanks for the tip about the other sites. I'll check them out. Almost time to hit your favorite inshore spot for the little boat.
