    Cutting your Butts

I've got a couple Ugly stix for Grouper fishing and would like them better if the reel sat lower. Can I just cut the butt ( about 3-4 " ) and put it back together? Have no clue how to do it.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I don't see any reason why you couldn't. I assume that the grips are EVA? If so I would cut on the conservative side (3 inches instead of 4), then take a razor and cut off about 1/2-3/4 of an inch of the eva only. Then measure the blank diameter and order a new butt cap for it. Clean and prep the blank (that you stripped the EVA off of) and epoxy on the new cap. Seems reasonable. Post up some pics if you get the chance and maybe that would help with brainstorming it too.

should be an easy and inexpensive fix. 8 bucks for the Flexcoat rodbuilders epoxy and depending if you want a gimbal or not should run you no more than $20 for all shipped.

What is the best way to cut the rod? Fine tooth hacksaw, carbide wheel on a dremel, something else?

I always use a dremel for cutting blanks/grips/tip tops and all. I find it to leave a nice clean cut that a typical saw cannot provide. IMO its easiar to control in the hand.

is it hollow or solid blank? if its hollow cut some of the blank, spin it, cut again until you reach a full circle. Because hollow blanks generally compress, you can crack the blank if you go all the way through in one shot. I just learned this lol
