The urethane foam is shaped the way you want it, then you slide a carbon sleeve over it - The carbon is knitted - Just like a sock. You can snug it up just by "stretching" it through the main portion of the grip.

The foam has a small hole all the way through - Slide in a mandrel and put that on your rod lathe so it turns freely. I use a throwaway brush and put on a coat of West System Epoxy making sure to saturate the carbon into the foam.

then with gloves on I'll work the whole thing with my hands to get the air out and to remove some of the excess epoxy.

For the very ends and where you have major diameter transitions, cable ties work great - you can just cut them off and sand once the epoxy is cured

The other common method is to use special heat shrink tubing (release agent coating on the inside) to snug the carbon onto the foam. You have to be really careful to control the heat, or the epoxy will boil and make a nasty mess
