Considering the way a circle hook works,
Is a barb on the hook necessary ?
Seems a circle hook works by, well, circling the jaw bone
not penetration like a J hook.
Does not seem like it would be to easy for the fish to spit it
without a barb.

Just a "stupid" thought, but doesn't the barb help maintain the fish ON THE HOOK?![]()
Yes it does with a J hook that works by penetration.
Keeps the hook from backing out.
A circle works in a completely different way.
If you put a J hook in me I can pull it out without a barb.
If you handcuff me, I'm pretty much stuck with it. Pun intended.
Thus , My question ?![]()
Try it. I did and delete them on all my c-hooks now. A lot easier to remove also.
I'll experiment with it and take a couple barbs off and see. I understand very well the premise of the C-hook but the barb off, I'll give it a try.
No... you dont need a barb to keep your fish on the hook even with J hooks. If you keep constant pressure on the line and dont let the line belly too much. Some Fly fisherman have been going barbless for 80 years. I crimp the barbs on alot of stuff Im fishing with. Not just circle hooks either.
