    Chatham Specials: White on White

These are long bendy rods! The blank is a Seeker IGFA 80H with Aftco guides and #6 butt. The blank is mostly uncut, just trimmed to clean up the ends. I went with an extra guide due to the length of the rod. The OAL from butt to tip is 8'5". It's almost as long as my flyrods!

Now for the wraps...what an effin nightmare. I set out on what I thought was a VERY simple pattern, NONE . It was done in white NCP thread over a single wrap of Kevlar, stronger than steel. What I learned was:

    1) White thread turns translucent when the flexcote goes on. The kevlar, foot guides and any marks under the wrap INCLUDING MAGIC MARKER show through.

    2) NCP stretches when a thread preserver is applied.

    3) After 4 weeks of rod wrapping hell, my vocabulary is nothing short of EPIC.

If you opt to do a rod in white, my recommendation is DON'T DO IT. Next time, I'll awlgrip the damn things.

Looks great. Yes, white can be difficult, but once you follow the tricks of the trade to address the issues, all goes well!!!

Absolutely not!!! I think it looks absolutely beautiful!!! I sincerely applaud you on the sick job that you did on it!!!

Not many people get the white blanks anymore because of finish yellowing. What finish did you put on the rod?

    KK

I was hoping for a lesson.

A friend also mentioned the yellowing before I started. There's another reason to avoid white on white LOL

The finish is that flexcote UV stuff. Plus a couple coats of UV protecting wax. I'm not too worried about it. These rods won't get out enough to sunburn. I prefer the lighter stand-up stuff.

    And thanks for the compliments.

PS if they do yellow, I'll tear them down and re-do them in BLACK
