    Cancun fishing

I'm going to Cancun in Janurary for a week and have booked a offshore charter and a flats charter. The resort provides Kayaks. I asked about a fishing license and was told that it was illegal to fish in Cancun on my own without a Guide. Does any one know if this is true

I live down here and I never heard that. You can get a fishing license at Semernat there is one in the Hotel zone. The only thing you need to watch out for is you can't fish in a park in Mexico. There is one at the south end of the Hotel zone (Nizuc) If you see tour boats anchored out they are in the park. As far as fishing right in front of one of those hotel I don't know what you would catch.

I fished off the dock at a place in Playa del Carmen a few years ago without a license and no one bothered me. I caught some needlefish, various reef fish, various jacks, needlefish, and hooked a spanish or similar mackerel. Also got some cool underwater pics of the mackerel while snorkeling. All were caught on small flies (2-3"). I've seen a bunch of pompano and permit in the area snorkeling, and I hear there are bonefish and tarpon as well. Of course, cuda's and shark are all over the place. Good luck.

    Re:

Although Cancun is known for its sprawling hotel district and its spring break parties, thirty-some years ago it was a quaint fishing village of just over 100 people. Even though Cancun has grown considerably throughout history, Cancun deep sea fishing is still a way of life for residents of Cancun and a popular pastime for tourists. There are many marinas in Cancun that offer Cancun fishing charters. Most companies will include everything you need for a great day out on the water, including fishing equipment, bait, tackle, soft drinks or beer, and even a fishing license. It's up to you to decide how many people you want in your boat. Some tourists want a quiet day of fishing with their families, while other Cancun fishing trips include ten or more people.

You do not need a fishing license to fish from the shore.

While there certainly is fishing around Cancun I wouldn't call it very good and sure wouldn't call it deep sea fishing.

You have two realistic choices. The first is to go to Isla and keep going another forty miles past Isla and you will have fantastic sailfishing.

The second choice is to go down an hour south to Puerto Aventuras and you can fish one of the top ten sailfish areas in the world. Plus have shots at Marlin, wahoo, etc.

    Have fun.
