In simplistic terms - You buy all the components (blank, reel seat, grips, butt, guides). Epoxy grips and reel set into place. Then the rod is put on a variable speed lathe (or turned by hand) and the guides are wrapped on with thread.
When the guides are done, they get 2 coats of epoxy. Put on the tip and butt and you are done
really more like assembling than building.
If you think you want to try it, the quickest way to learn is to get someone to show you the basics
where would i go to learn the basics? a class?
I assume you are in LBI from your handle.
JPR Rods I believe does classes, and has monthly rod building club meetings with demonstrations. Unfortunately, he is in Pensyltucky
Kevin Bogan in Point Pleasant used to do classes (thats who taught me), and I believe his cousin in Brielle does as well
I have a rod on the lathe that I will be starting as soon as I get a chance. If you want to watch a rookie, I can show you the basics
Check out mudhole.com, they have books, videos and tutorials that might help
Cabela's Tackle craft catalogue sells rod building kits. Includes the blank and all components as well as instructions. All the parts are sized and matched. There are also several very good books on rod building. Hade one by Dale Clemmens when I was a kid.
Start off with a spin rod kit and build more difficult ones as you get experience.
we offer classes in Jan/Feb.
Tri-state Custom Rod Builders.
i do private lessons.
and sometimes Pensyltucky is worth the ride
rodbuilding meetings start sept...third thursday of the month.
getting a "hands on" is SO MUCH BETTER that trying to read a book.
also have parts needed.
Ok, if i were to go for it would you jump right in and get the top of the line stuff and blanks to start or start with the cheaper stuff?
If you take our classes..you will build a FANTASTIC rod.
we will show you, and help you build a first class rod.
dont be afraid to go for the good stuff.
if you use cheap stuff and build something just to build.
you will not use it to much.
build something you will use.
