On smaller hooks and wire yes, then cover with adhesive lined shrink tube, on the bigger stuff 10/0 and up i just crimp the wire straight then shrink tube.

Its actually pretty guick and easy. Especially since I normally use an eye splice for all my cable connections.

I'm trying to make my rigs as simple as possible. I don't have to stack beads anymore and this seemed like a possible alternative to shrinking, taping and all that stuff.

I would still shrink or tape. It makes it look nice and clean. You can also double a piece of single strand wire like 15 or 18 and put it through the eye of the hook and lay it next to the double section of your cable and then heat shrink or tape. It helps stiffen it up.

U can also take a few more wraps on the shank of the hook before going back through the hook's eye, for possibly even a stiffer connection.
