Neither should they pop. If I see any swimming plug pop I either get it to work right or pull it out of the spread. They should be under the surface all the time. If you simply can't stop them from breaking out for eg in particularly difficult conditions, go to all weighted skirted lures or keep just one plug in fairly short where the more consistent wake pattern should help it stay in.
The body is that of poly balsa...wood like plastic...The lure is very weak.
Pop was the wrong word...What I was trying to get at was the lure digs and digs...sometimes it doesn't catch on the dig and flutters up on its side...then catches and digs again...usually this happens on turns...this is the time you will find the hooks to get caught on the lure.

I've used the plugs a lot. Quit them years ago because of tuning issues and found far more effective lures for wahoo. If you do run them, I strongly suggest that you do so on "Dacron hammers", which you can read about in the "Inside Fred's Head" section of our website. Back when we fished them a lot we ran them very tight off of bent butts. Many of the wahoo that I have fished for like their baits run amazingly close to the boat.
We had better success with the Boone Cairns Swimmers, although we did abandon plugs altogether.
Single or circle hooks when it comes to wahoo and other fish too.
Single hooks are the way to go.. One important thing to remember when fishing for wahoo is to make sure your drag is tight enough. A wahoo has such sharp teeth that when it grabs a hard lure and runs, if the drag isn't tight enough, the fish will simply pinch the lure in its teeth until it decides to shake its head and there goes your fish.. You want the strike drag tight enough so that when the fish hits it pulls the lure through the fishes mouth and sticks the hook in..
I have had modest success with the marauder and there is normally one in my spread when wahoo fishing.
If your going to use those things, put em' right in the prop wash use the double hooks, tail only and downsize the hook, they create such commotion that the large hooks flail and flop missing strikes. MOP.

we have had ALOT of sucess with those lures, and i know Joe and Thomas on the Low Profile have caught a bunch of SLOBS on the plugs, in the bahamas.
20 minutes in the water....two hits and this was the result...45 minutes round trip...cheers wahooking! First run with the lure....Nothing like fresh wahoo...he was still alive when we got back to the dock!!!
(also had a hit on a marauder, but lost it)
Been using Wahoo King's suggested speed trolling method and have had good success. I'm not greedy, so as soon as I hook a hoo (usually in the first hour), I head home. I'm doing an all day fishing trip on Saturday and I do expect to have a half dozen or so.....the attached photo is this morning's catch (on the water at 6:15, back home by 8:30). A nice 50 pounder.
Umm yeah, need to order me some. Shhh don't tell nobody and we can get the Wahoo jackpot for the tournaments.![]()
