Avet SX reel that does not free spool easily
I have an Avet SX reel that does not free spool easily. However, if I push in the knob that sets the drag, it will free spool quite easily when the lever is set to free spool. Can anyone help me with the solution to this problem?

use the fine drag setting on the side. It is a machined aluminum knob

Question to fatboy
Do you mean that there is a fine adjustment drag knob in addition to the drag adjustment knob with numbers on it?

what i think you have is rust between the spool shaft (key #4) and the brake bearing (key #17). the brake disc (key #18) needs to slide freely on the spool shaft when the lever is pushed back from strike to free. if the bearing surface is corroded, you get the problem that you have so aptly described.
also, if you have rust in the brake bearing, then you might also have corrosion in or around any of the other 5 bearings in the reel. if you notice a roughness when you spin the spool (two spool bearings), roughness when you turn the handle (two handle bearings), or roughness AND resistance when you turn the handle (right main side plate bearing), then you have bearing issues. bearings are the achilles heel of the lever drag reel.
