One of my buddies has four of them for sale so I was planning on maybe buying 2 of them. but the avets seem like good reels. Id love to get one of those 50's with 100lbs drag at strike for a planer rod![]()

The 80 might be better suited for a planer reel, more capacity, but I think that 50TRX-W would do, just make sure you reglass those holders in your boat, they could do a bit of damage. I've thought about using the 50TRX for a planer reel as well. We had some fun with blue sharks early this season, locking the 30W's down to about 40+lb of drag and using the gunnel, those fish were sooooo over matched. The SX's are great reels, I've landed over 200 bass over 30lbs on them in the last 2 seasons and never had a failure and maintenance is far less then my other reels.
Sweet, Thats what I want to hear I think I'm gonna pick 2 up tomarrow![]()
I can't find a single reason to get an Sx over and MX. I sold my SX's to buy Mx's.

I have a blue SX with 300yd of braid and 100yd topshot mono. Works great for Yellowtail here is Southern California.
I've also used it for Rock fish just fine. I am planning on getting an MX and possibly another SX down the line.
So far the Avet has been the best bang for the buck. Cast's far and is very smooth.
I ended up gettin 2 of them and put them on 50-100lb trevala rods.they are awsome I cant wait to try them out soon.
mike, the saltist 30t will deliver an easy 15#'s of drag if you switch to greased carbontex. you can actually get more, as much as 25#'s, but the anti-reverse system may fail at drag settings higher then 15#'s.
the sx will deliver a maximum of 9#'s of drag (strike or full) before you start seeing too much pressure on the right main side plate bearing. i could probably hot rod the sx to get nearly 20#'s of drag at strike with good freespool. once you pass 9#'s, though, you see increasing resistance when you try to turn the handle. at 20#'s the handle is nearly impossible to turn and you ruin the right main side plate bearing.
for grouper fishing, you need a minimum 20#'s of drag, right? maybe more like 25 or 30#'s ???? in a small pocket rocket, you are looking at an accurate or a penn torque. these are true third generation reels that can deliver enough drag to take full advantage of the new spectras.
AlanTani,
I got 2 of the avets and like it says I'm getting around 9lbs at strike with freespool but there is considerable resistance when I turn the handle. I think these reels had alot of use before I got them, but I got a good deal. I may be sendin them off to you in the future for some better/smoother drag. I have 30lb PP on there now so I dont want to go much over 9lbs. Ive caught alot of grouper on my saltist back when the drag was failing and I had 9lbs max. but with the carbonex drag I'm now gettin 18-20lbs
